At Northern Arizona Healthcare, we have begun having volunteers rounding in our Emergency Departments to offer comfort items. Many who come into the E.D. neglect to bring items they may need during their stay due to the urgency of the situation. Even if visitors and patients are only here for a few hours, it can be challenging to be without needed items.
We have a number of items to give to patients such as reading glasses, coloring/puzzle books, phone chargers and playing cards. Volunteers are also encouraged to engage in conversation when appropriate to provide company to those who may be alone. Our volunteers are able to make patients/families feel they have not been forgotten while staff is busy with other patients.
